Background of the School
The institution, which was established in 1970, bears Sir James Douglas’s name, a former governor of British Columbia. Kwantlen College separated from Douglas College in 1981.
Arms and Armor
On January 21, 2020, Douglas College’s coat of arms was made public. Carrielynn Victor, a Coast Salish artist, created the logo for the college’s 50th anniversary. First in the history of Canada, the insignia was entirely created by an Indigenous artist. The college’s motto, “Do what you love,” is referenced by the heart in the center of the logo. Cedar, a locally available wood product, was used to make the crown on top of it.
The crest has a raven on top, which is meant to indicate intelligence as the bird does. The raven is surrounded by two Douglas fir trees that are intended to represent a connection to the college’s name. Below the shield are the words “Excellence, Knowledge, Passion” written in Coast Salish. The use of the Indigenous language acknowledges the fact that the college is situated on First Nations land.
Controversy
An investigation by Global’s 16×9 news magazine on alleged massive fraud at Douglas College’s Chinese partner campuses aired in January 2012. Some academic staff members reported that some Chinese graduates couldn’t communicate in simple English. They claimed widespread fraud, whereby students were assured of passing their courses using a variety of techniques, including make-up tests that got progressively easier and black market answer sheets, as well as grade tampering. When asked about the matter, Scott McAlpine, president of Douglas College, allegedly responded that “he needed plausible deniability and he wanted to see and hear nothing,” according to Robert Buller, a former dean of commerce and business.
Since then, a report on the matter has been released by Douglas College and the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education.
The investigation cited specific areas of concern, such as the lack of control in the use of challenge examinations, even though it concluded that there was “no evidence of academic dishonesty or fraud in the operations of Douglas College.” According to the analysis, Douglas College would have benefited from quicker and more carefully thought-out answers to previously reported problems.
